Problems

Waste products from dairy, poultry and ruminant production facilities, pasture land and
abattoirs are contaminating the drains and rivers in Brunei. They give off unpleasant
smells to the surroundings. They pose potential health hazards to human beings as the
burning of feathers and dead chickens not only results in the emission of offensive smells
but could also assist the spreading of diseases. Currently there are no specific methods of
disposal in Brunei. Farm wastes are either simply buried and burnt within the farm
premises, or are dumped directly into domestic garbage dumping sites, which in turn are
emptied at the existing rubbish landfill.

Possible solutions

The understanding of farmers in Brunei regarding proper farm waste disposal should be investigated, and the awareness of the farmers of the importance of proper farm waste disposal should be raised. Authorities should be encouraged to allocate appropriate areas of land as disposal sites for farm waste. A livestock waste management legislation should be created which can set up firm rules and regulations regarding the disposal of farm waste. Farms should be monitored more closely and frequently.

Actions taken

The writer attended an on site briefing on Disposal of Farm Veterinary Wastes to gain a better understanding of proper farm waste disposal and prepared pamphlets on Good Animal Husbandry Practices and Mortality Management. The writer met with members of staff of the Agricultural Department to discuss various topics regarding proper farm waste disposal, such as their commitment to allocate areas of land as appropriate disposal sites. The writer also attended a briefing on strengthening farm monitoring and proposed legislation and regulations for the monitoring of animal disease.
